What was culture, anyway-phenomenal reality or analytic construct? How ought one to study it-as science or as history? And however one answered these first two Ciuestions, how was the psychological study of the individual implicated in the study of culture (crucially or not at all)? By their responses to any and all of these questions, one could group and differentiate the major anthropologists of the time: White from Kluckhohn, White from Kroeber, Benedict and Sapir from Kroeber and White, and so on.

First, Spiro writes, Radcliffe-Brown once again confused function with cause by an illegitimate transformation of religion from a sufficient condition for the satisfaction of a structural requirement (social solidarity) to a necessary one. Not only, then, is an explanation of religion's origins invoked when it should not have been, but the explanation of persistence is botched. Second, even if we grant the structural-functional epitome, that the function of religion is to produce social solidarity, we should relize that we have then "explained" social solidarity, not religion.

And as "imperious drives" they must be reduced if the organism is to remain integratively functional. Intentionality is thus rendered latent but remains teleologically defensible. Indeed, by using the notion of unconscious motivation, and the host of psychodynamic processes implicated by postulating the unconscious, Spiro is able to claim that more than a teleologically functional explanation has been offered. For once we grant the validity of unconscious motivation, then, in Hempel's words, "explanation by reference to motives, objectives, or the like may be perfectly legitimate in the case of purposive behavior and its effects.
